In 1941 the RAF realised that the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V was being dangerously outclassed by new Luftwaffe fighters – principally the Focke-Wulfe FW190. Losses were high, and a new and more powerful fighter was needed to meet this threat. Various developments culminated in the Spitfire Mk.IX, which entered production in 1942 with its powerful Merlin 61, 66 and 70 series engines which provided drastically improved climb rate, top speed and service ceiling. This Spitfire variant was in service for the rest of the war, and among all Spitfire marks, it is widely regarded by RAF and Commonwealth pilots as one of the best of all Spitfires ever built.

“Flying Dray” is a nickname given to some Spitfires that engaged in the informal transport of beer in casks attached to bomb racks, flown across the channel from British breweries to bases in France. They were a welcome morale booster for troops on the front line of the Allied invasion of Europe.

This kit contains high quality waterslide decal markings made by Cartograf, for two aircraft:

• Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXe, MK329, No. 144 Wing RAF, Normandy, 1944. Flown by Wing Commander James Edgar “Johnnie” Johnson.

• Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXe, RW382 “The Suffolk Spitfire” in the historic markings of “Porky II,” 309th Fighter Squadron USAAF. Flown by Lieutenant Robert Connor.

This kit is originally manufactured by EDUARD - MODEL ACCESSORIES Ltd, who have kindly supplied the plastic frames to re-issue them as a Beacon Models product.

[Beacon Models] are delighted to announce an exciting collaboration with Eduard Model Accessories. We will be re-issuing their popular 1/144 Spitfire Mk.IXc as a Beacon Models kit in our Hangar Edition kit format!

We still intend to develop new Battle of Britain era aircraft kits in 1/144 in the near future, however this opportunity came up and was too exciting to let go.

As part of this project, we will be taking suggestions for which marking schemes we should include with the kit, and we will choose some and put it to a final customer vote .

So tell us which Mk.IXc serial numbers, markings and pilots you think are cool, we'd love to know what you want to see most. I'm sure it will be hard to pick a shortlist for the final vote for the two schemes in our kit!

Supermarine Spitfire vs Messerschmitt Bf109

Without a doubt, it is in large part because of these stories and the men behind them that the Battle of Britain has been so fascinating to generations that came afterwards. Our Spitfire Mk.I Vs Bf109E dogfight set depicts one such story, and it was difficult indeed to choose two pilots in two aircraft that fought in an encounter during the summer of 1940.

On September 5th 1940, Pilot Officer Gerald “Stapme” Stapleton of No. 603 Squadron RAF shot down a Bf109E-4 flow by Oberleutnant Franz von Werra, Gruppe Adjutant of Staab II/JG3. Records of the event indicate that P/O Stapleton – most probably flying Spitfire N.3196 “XT-L” – shot down Von Werra flying Bf109E “Black Chevron” over Marden, Kent on the morning of the 5th.

The Bf109 served as the backbone of the Luftwaffe from the Spanish Civil War to the conclusion of WWII. The three highest scoring aces of all time flew variants of this aircraft, claiming a combined total of 928 victories.
