Pegasus Bridge is a sub type of bascule bridge, the "Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridge" or "rolling bridge". Bridges of this type do not pivot about a hinge point, but roll back on curved tread plates attached to the girders of the main span. This design allows a greater clearance of the waterway for a given opening angle.
Move the engine room of this model backwards will roll back and raise the bridge.

Model measures 9.5 cm X 32 cm X 8 cm ( 3.75" X 12.7" X 3.2") when assembled. Bridge section can be raised by moving the engine room backwards.

Operation Deadstick

22:30 5th June, Operation Deadstick set off "The Longest Day".

The objective was to capture intact two road bridges in Normandy across the River Orne and the Caen Canal.

Responsibility for the operation fell to the members of 'D' Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, part of the 6th Airlanding Brigade of the 6th Airborne Division. The assault group comprised a reinforced company of six infantry platoons and an attached platoon of Royal Engineers. They flew from the south of England to Normandy in six Airspeed Horsa gliders.

At 22:30 on the 5th June, the first of six Halifax aircraft from 298 and 644 Squadrons, each towing a Horsa glider containing men of Major Howard's coup de main force, began to take-off from Tarrant Rushton.

At 00:16 on the 6th June 1944, Glider No.92, containing Major Howard and No.1 Platoon of the coup de main force, approached their objective, Bénouville bridge. Once landed, they proceeded to attack and take over the bridge.

Lieutenant Den Brotheridge and Lance corporal Fred Greenhalgh became the first British soldier casualties on D-Day.

Another three gliders landing near the River Orne to attack and take over Ranville bridge.

After a brief exchange of fire, both bridges were captured had been taken in just ten minutes.

The operation was later hailed by Air Vice-Marshal Leigh-Mallory, the commander of Allied air forces during the invasion, as "one of the most outstanding flying achievements of the war."

In 1944 Bénouville bridge was renamed Pegasus Bridge in honour of the operation. The name is derived from the shoulder emblem worn by the British airborne forces, which is the flying horse Pegasus.

SdKfz 251/20 UHU - Variant of SdKfz 251 Ausf D Schützenpanzerwagen (Infrarotscheinwerfer), mounting a 60 cm infrared searchlight with a range of 1.5 km for illuminate target at night. Used together with Panther and Nachtjäger armed with Vampir devices.

SdKfz 251 Ausf D Half-track - Update version of SdKfz 251 Ausf C, form the basis of armoured transport and 20 + different purposed vehicles. 

7.5 cm Pak 40 - 7.5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 40 was developed by Rheinmetall from 1939 to 1941 and used by the German forces since. Some were installed on armoured cars such as SdKfz 251/22 to give it mobility From mid WWII onward, vehicle mounted version was developed (7.5 cm KwK 40) and mounted on tank and tank destroyers.

M3A1 Half-track - Widely used by Allies during WWII and beyond. Basis for variants like AA gun and mortar carriage. 

Somua S35 - French medium Cavalry tank built from 1936 to 1940. Featuring a 47 mm SA 35 gun and sloped armour. It was superior in both armament and armour to the Panzer IIIs at the time of invasion of France. About 440 vehicles were built. 

Bär Heavy Assault Gun - Conceptual design of the Bär was finished in May 1942. With a weight of 120,000 Kg but powered by a 700 hp Maybach HL 230 engine, it could only have a maximum speed of 20 km/hr. It was to carry a 305 mm (L/16) gun firing a combined round weighting 350 kg with 50 kg explosive in the warhead. Muzzle velocity was 355 m/sec, range 10,500 meters. No prototype was ever built.

CGDs newest release is something a little different to normal, so some of you will  like it and others will be challenged by it!?

After seeing the success of German glider landings during the early stage of WWII, The British Air Ministry issued a specification for a glider to the company Airspeed. The horsa was developed. Mark I has a port side door-ramp and could carry 28 fully armed soldiers. Mark II the improved version had a hinged nose for direct loading of vehicles and guns. Tail section can also dropped off after landing for quick exit of troops and equipment.

The Horsa was first used in an unsuccessful attack on German Heavy Water Plant at Rjukan, Norway in November 1942. Its major use started from the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, followed by D-Day, invasion of Southern France, Arnhem in 1944 and in the Rhine Crossing in March 1945.

The History
The history of this vehicle begins on January 18 1945 when it was lost while trying cross the Pilica River in Poland, becoming embedded in the sandy river bed. This vehicle is probably one of several prototypes of this variant for which the production has never been fully accounted.

While the history of the Sd.FKz 8 series dates back to 1934, the evolution and history of this particular variant is undocumented. It clearly shares a heritage of the Sd.Kfz 8 which was designed as a standard tractor chassis for the purpose of towing the 88mm Flak Cannon (and other large guns), this one however having alternative configuration with an armoured body with 12mm steel plates.

This vehicle was of late war production and served on the Eastern Front with a Luftwaffe unit, probably tasked with providing AA Flak duties utilising the mighty 88mm.

Interestingly, the original license plate WL 323863 was still with the vehicle when recovered from the river and identifies it as Luftwaffe Vehicle. This plate also differs to the license plate seen in other SDKFZ8 DB10 variants of this type, thereby giving weight to the argument that there was more than one of this type.

The first attempt to extract this from the Pilica River in 1957 by Polish Military Engineers was unsuccessful. It’s not clear if the vehicle suffered further damage as a result of this action?

In 1999 a group of Military Enthusiast were able to extract the 18-ton Vehicle and reconstruction was completed in 2003. The engine was further renovated and the vehicle was able to move under its own power by 2005. It was during this restoration process that the vehicle acquired its nickname of "Lufcik".

Fact or Fiction?
Although only one of these beasts have been found it is thought to have had a short production run of 20 – 30 units in this configuration. What we can see is that one unit has been recovered and restored in Poland and a small number of photographs exist of this configuration deployed in the field.

No official records have been discovered to reveal how many of these vehicles were completed, and it appears that this example is the only one to make it past the scrap merchant and into a museum.
This restored vehicle can be seen at the Pilica River Heritage Park in Tomaszow, Poland where you can actually ride as a passenger during the Summer Events!

Interestingly, the original Maybach engine was thought beyond economical repair, so it was to be replaced with a Russian Truck engine. However, on inspection it became evident that the later period Russian engine had very similar design to the Maybach engine (possibly a Soviet copy of the Maybach design) this allowed for an engine to be restored incorporating much of the original transmission and many other elements of the running gear...

Towards the end of September 1939, Krupp designed the "first real self-propelled artillery piece", the Sonderkraftfahrzeug 165/1 (Special Purpose Vehicle 165/1, abbreviated Sd.Kfz. 165/1). After a series of tests, the Sd.Kfz. 165/1 was accepted by the Wehrmacht in early January 1940. In 1941, Krupp built prototype vehicles armed with the 105 mm leichte Feldhaubitze 18/1 L/28 (light field howitzer 18/1 L/28, abbreviated leFH 18/1 L/28) cannon based on a modified Panzer IV chassis. The prototypes were fitted with a smaller six-cylinder Maybach HL66P engine, which had a power capacity of 188 hp (140 kW). Although 200 vehicles were ordered, Krupp completed only 10 prototypes in the final four months of 1942. These saw service on the Eastern Front.

CGD has two great announcements today, 1) the release of the MAUS II Panzer 46 model, and 2) the introduction of the ABS-L printing material.

"Maus" - The Super Heavy Tank "Maus" project began with a meeting between Hitler, Speer and Porsche in June 1942. Two prototypes were built but unconfirmed sources claimed that there might be five prototypes built before the war ended. The surviving exhibit in Kubinka Museum has the hull of the first prototype and turret form the second prototype. 

Battle Ready Treatment - Since the Maus was still in prototype stage before the war ended, this model was designed with enhancements to reflect what the tank would look if it went into mass production.

As Hitler criticized the prototype Porsche turret mounting the 128mm gun as a toy, and insisted on a heavier 150mm or even 175mm gun, the turret was replaced with a Tiger II styled turret with Infa-rot device for the commander. This turret design eliminated the "shot trap" present in the Porsche Maus design.

A MG 34 was installed in hull front to be operated by the radio operator for close quarter defense. Spare tracks were strategically placed on the side next to the two internal fuel tanks as additional armour.

The 1000L fuel tank on the first prototype was intended for a flamethrower as secondary weapon insisted by the Wehrmacht. The request was cancelled soon afterward. A rack for jerry cans and tool boxes for maintenance were installed instead.

ABS-L is an acrylic resin used for 3D printing. It is NOT brittle as regular acrylic material. It is strong and tough when properly structured, and flexible when thin. But it still will break if bended too much.

The material is printed in a resolution of approximately 250dpi, or 0.1mm thick layers, to give a smooth model with sharp details. Sometimes layering effect appears on sloped areas of the model which is a characteristic of 3D printing.This material can be cut, sand, filed easily. It accepts regular model paints readily and can be glued with instant glue/super glue/Cyanoacrylate glue.

2. How does the ABS-L material compare to the nylon material previously used?
ABS-L has a smoother surface after painting and the details are sharper than the nylon supplied by Shapeways printing process

3. Other benefits?
The new printing printing process and quality assurance is undertaken within CGD workshops and all items are checked repeatedly throughout the manufacturing process.

This set contains 4 Luftwaffe ground crew in maintenance duty, 3 Luftwaffe pilots, 1 Krupp Feldkran, 1 1.2-meter ladder platform and 1 2-meter ladder platform.

This model has six parts: chassis (pre-assembled with tracks), gun (detached for shipping), two mid section track covers and two rear section track covers (which are removable).

Jagd Panzer E 100 "Krokodil" - In 1945, the German war machine initiated a development program (Entwicklung, or E) aimed at categorizing the development of AFVs in 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ton weight brackets.

The E 100 was the heaviest in the series and was developed at the same time as the Porsche Maus. Only the chassis of the prototype was discovered after the war which was evaluated by the British Army and then scrapped.

If the development of the E 100 had continued, a tank destroyer version that will probably carried a 170mm main gun on a fixed superstructure based on the E 100 chassis will follow.

The June 2013 edition of Armour Modelling magazine has an interesting feature on upcoming releases (Late 2013?). I think at this stage they will follow the recent format of WTM kits of being issued unpainted but in various colours of plastic, though if this was a return to the prepainted WTM items of old then all the better!?

It is interesting that the 8t was first spotted way back in 2006 and reported on this blog
http://kampfgruppe144.blogspot.co.uk/2006/07/takara-wtm-10-part-2.html, it would be interesting to see some of the items on that post also released one day.

While this 88mm does not have the sophistication and quality of the Strategist 88mm, it will be a more economic and could allow for some interesting customisations.

Also do not forget there are KG144 and CGD figure sets that would complement this release!

Rotating turret and two detachable Schurzen. Infrared devices are also built into the commander's hatch nd driver's view port.

"BergepanzerIV" - Bergepanzer IV was an armoured recovery vehicle based on the Panzer IV chassis. Panzer IV was the most widely manufactured and deployed German tank in WWII since late 1930s. It has numerous variants and also was used as basis for other fighting vehicles including tank destroyers and Flakpanzers. 21 Bergepanzer IVs were converted from Panzer IV hulls returned for repair between Oct. 1944 and Jan 1945. Turrets were removed and turret ring covered with a wooden plank cover with access hatch. A 2-ton jib crane and rigid towing bars were added.

This is a new 1:144 German JgPz E 75 (Jagd Panther II) from the new Wargame Armour series of CGD. This item is fully painted in the 3 Colour Disruptive Camouflage scheme, or dunkelgelb and is  Weathered with no assembling required.

E 75 standard tank - In 1945, the German war machine initiated a development program (Entwicklung, or E) aimed at categorizing the development of AFVs in 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ton weight brackets. The E 75 was designed to be between 75 to 100 ton and as a standard tank replacing the King Tiger and Jagdtiger. The tank was almost identical to the King Tiger in size but would be easier, cheaper and quicker to produce than the previous designs.

The E 75 shared a lot of components with the E 50 and has the same hull design and dimension. The E 50 has more space inside through using thinner rolled armour plate and hence lighter weight.

To handle the additional weight, the E 75 has an additional suspension unit with 2 more road wheels on each side. The E 75 used E 50's combat track as transport track and another wider track as combat track.

This tank is modelled after a speculative drawing showing a Jagdpanzer developed from the E 75 chassis with an 128mm KwK 44. The gun compartment is in the forward postion of the chassis similar to Jagdpanther. This layout provides a roomier crew compartment than the JgPz E 50 ( and full access of the engine compartment during servicing. The drawback is the overall length of the tank is very much increased with the ever larger gun installed. Maneuvering in tight street corners will be very difficult

M6A2E1 - M6 was a heavy tank developed by the US during WWII after seeing the success of tank deployment by the Germans. Although the M6 was developed with heavy armour and slightly powerful gun, the US Armored Corps prefered the Sherman instead for its reliability, cheaper in cost and ease to transport. The M6 suffered from a high silhouette, awkward internal layout and reliability problems.

Only 4 units were produced and they never left the US. One prototype was used to produce a 77 ton tank with thicker glacis armour and fitted with a turret designed for the T29 heavy tank, armed with a 105mm gun. It was designated M6A2E1.
