Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger
The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) is an American torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air and naval aviation services around the world.

The Avenger entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. Despite the loss of five of the six Avengers on its combat debut, it survived in service to become one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. Greatly modified after the war, it remained in use until the 1960s

Primary Users by US Navy,Royal Navy,Royal New Zealand Air force, Royal Canadian Navy.
Also used by Brazil,Cuba,France,Japan,Netherlands and Uruguay

A famous incident involving the TBM / TBF Avenger aircraft was the disappearance of Flight 19, a training flight of five Avengers that originated from Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale and was lost in December 1945 over the Bermuda Triangle.

Reissued, with injected plastic kit with vacform and clear canopies. Silk Screen decals for the Blue Angeles and VFA-192 Golden Dragons - aircraft 209 as seen in the movie Bridge at TOKO-Ri.

The Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer's first jet fighter and one of the United States Navy's first successful carrier-based jet fighters. A single-engined, straight-winged day fighter, it was fitted with an armament of four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannons and could carry a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions.

The Panther was used extensively by the U.S. Navy and the United States Marine Corps in the Korean War. It was also the first jet aircraft used by the Blue Angels flight team, being used by them from 1949 through to late 1954. The aircraft was exported to Argentina and was the first jet used by the Argentine Naval Aviation.

The Grumman F11F/F-11 Tiger was the first supersonic, single-seat carrier-based United States Navy fighter aircraft in operation during the 1950s and 1960s. Originally designated the F11F Tiger in April 1955 under the pre-1962 Navy designation system, it was redesignated as F-11 Tiger under the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system.

The kit conforms to the Miniwing signature format and feel being cleanly cast and no obvious air bubbles. The panel lines on fuselage  are very finely cast and provide a good balance between finesse and detailing, the underwing lines are a little more defined but do convey a lot of detail

Decals are provided for aircraft serving in VF-51 of the Pacific Fleet.


Under wing pylons are provided, but no weapons or stores so these will have to come from your stash or Oz-Mods?

The F11F (F-11) Tiger origins can be traced back to a privately funded 1952 Grumman concept to modernize the F9F-6/7 Cougar by implementing the area rule and other advances. This Grumman company project was known as the G-98, and by the end had departed totally from the Cougar

The F11F/F-11 was used by the Blue Angels flight team from 1957 to 1969. Grumman Aircraft Corporation made about 200 Tigers, with last delivered 23 January 1959.

Ok, its not the first (Y-Kraft), its not the most detailed and expensive (Foxone), but it is the best value and most practical. That right, OzMods have commissioned a new conversion for the Revell Hawkeye kit and will be available from their website soon for $17.60 AUD - use the contact details for ordering information. 

The kit consist of two half shells of transparent clear injected plastic for the revised fuselage, which has various windows marked out finely, so you will need to practice your masking skills. It does however mean that the windows and fuselage are not separate pieces and that a nice smooth finish can be achieved around the glazed areas. you will be advised to choose your adhesive carefully as not to induce fogging. The injected tail plane and cargo doors are of a different plastic to the fuselage, and of course the ramp can be positioned as required. A simple a resin cockpit is supplied that would benefit from some additional self detailing. finally nose wheel well and assorted aerials also are included.

 Decals are provided for USN VRC-30 and are strong and bold in colour and will finish the kit of nicely

As part of the Warbirds collection, Dragon has produced a 1/144 scale model of the X-29. This item makes use of 100% new toolings, and it accurately reproduces the sleek shape of the experimental aircraft.

It is a shame that his is a prebuilt model and not a kit as per the recent X-1 and X-3, although the X-1 has been issued in both kit and built formats so there is a possibility.

As part of the USA’s experimental flight program, the X-29 first took to the air from Edwards Air Force Base on 14 December 1984. A total of two aircraft, based on Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter airframes, were produced and they flew in various tests up till 1991. The Grumman X-29’s key characteristics were forward-swept wings (at more than 33° angle), canard control surfaces and composite materials. The design was inherently unstable to increase its agility, so it utilized computerized fly-by-wire controls that could make 40 corrections per second while flying at a maximum speed of Mach 1.8.

From the US Navies manufacturer of choice, a really great looking aircraft. Although available late in WWII it failed to see active duty, but was deloyed in the Korean War.

The kit conforms to the Miniwing signature look and feel, being cleanly cast and with well defined panel lines and nice fit of parts on this item.

The main kits comprise of  40+ resin components and 2x vac-form resin canopy. Assembly and painting instructions are also included, and 3x decal schemes as provided pritned by Y-Kraft.

1/144 Grumman OV-1A "Mowhawk" - Miniwing

As exclusively previewed on this blog last month => here

Minwing have released another great kit, I think this is were producers like Miniwng score highly over the big boys such as Revell etc. It it their ability to take risks and produce unusal items that otherwise would not be seen.

It has been mastered by Kampflieger, who is building a solid reputation for producing good masters of varied subjects.

It must be noted that the panel lines are once again very fine and subtle, and therefore were quite difficult to get to show up on the photographs (at standard size). This means that you can be assured there are now huge canyons running between the panels!!

Two Decals options, and these as usual are printed by YKraft of Japan

Initially I would not have been drawn to this item, but having seen it and had it in my hands, I really like this! A nice and interesting subject well done.
