Jay

I get the feeling the CF-105 is the Canadian "TSR-2" ?

A brilliant project killed off for political reasons, probably to appease 'you know who' for reasons of self interest?

The Avro Arrow is the most overrated aircraft in history.

There are some facts posted at http://www.international.gc.ca/department/history-histoire/dcer/details-en.asp?intRefid=8169

Note the price is about $10 million each,"...the present programme called for their re-equipment with the CF-105, requiring a production order of 169 in number. These, together with aircraft recovered from the development and pre-production order for 37, would provide sufficient aircraft for nine squadrons. The total cost would be $2 billion spread from 1959-60 to 1963-64." [The Voodoos that were purchase instead were about $2 million each.]

The recommendation to cancel and why is shown by, "...the cost of the CF-105 programme as a whole was now of such a magnitude that the Chiefs of Staff felt that, to meet the modest requirement of manned aircraft presently considered advisable, it would be more economical to procure a fully developed interceptor of comparable performance in the U.S."

The Arrow 'unicorn' myth was created as part of a political conspiracy to defeat John Diefenbaker's government and harm Conservatives in general. There never was a 'unicorn'.

The reason the Voodoo was 2 million per aircraft as opposed to 10 is that it was a woefully inferior aircraft. It would be like a little leaguer trying to hit a fast ball from a major league picter. They're not even close.

The Arrow was simply, and factually, the most sophisticated aircraft of it's day. And would remain so for a good 10 years. It was cancelled for 1 reason. The American's didn't want their aircraft industry ruined.

"I get the feeling the CF-105 is the Canadian "TSR-2" ?"

It's the other way around. The TSR-2 flew 5 years after the Arrow was cancelled. The TSR-2 is the British Arrow.

The link to: http://www.international.gc.ca/department/history-histoire/dcer/details-en.asp?intRefid=8169

is a document created by the Conservative government purely on misinformation and distorted truths to cancel the project. Actual facts and documents recently revealed from the Eisenhower Library tell a MUCH different story. I suggest reading: 'Storms of Controversy' (4th Ed. 2010) to get the facts.

By the way -- the Voodoo's were not only inferior, but they were also second-hand. Certainly no replacement for the Arrow, in any way, shape or form.

Frankly, we blew it when we allowed the Arrow to be canned.
